Joshua 3:5 NIV

What is a consecration?

Consecrate means to make something sacred especially to devote irrevocably to the worship of God by solemn ceremony. Consecration is to be devoted to a purpose with dedication. Consecration is a set of processes encouraged and necessary for every believer to build a stronger relationship with God. Through these processes we discover God's expectations for our lives as we follow His instructions. Lastly consecration prepares us for service unto the Lord.

Traditionally, the church has fasted during the forty day observation of Lent. You may choose to continue in this path as the Lord leads you and your medical plan allows. Please read Isaiah 58 for an example of how we should conduct ourselves during this time. Abstaining from food is only one component of this consecration so let's be clear on a few things:

Why should I fast?

Fasting is a biblically encouraged practice of believers to discipline themselves and draw closer to God. Fasting enables the Holy Spirit to reveal your true spiritual condition, resulting in brokenness, repentance, and a transformed life. Fasting can result in a dynamic personal revival in your own life-and make you a channel of revival to others. Fasting is a biblical way to truly humble yourself in the sight of God (Psalm 35:13; Ezra 8:21). You may want to eliminate fried foods or excess sugar or certain types of food from your diet during this time. You may abstain from eating during a certain portion of the day. This is a matter that will be left to your discretion for this particular consecration.

Making it meaningful:

Fasting is an act of spiritual discipline where we endeavor to sacrifice fleshly pleasures so that we may become spiritually strong. Often we only focus on what we eliminate from our diet but we consecrate ineffectively when we don't eliminate toxic things out of hearts and spirits. During this time be sure to eliminate negative thinking, idle conversations, acts of selfish behavior and the like. This may be an opportunity to change or limit your time on social media and television and music choices. “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Philippians 4:8). Be sure that you are guarding your spiritual intake as well. You may find it helpful to refrain from or limit your exposure to certain music, television shows, and social media networks.

Effective consecration is always driven by prayer and communion with the Lord through worship, and study of the scriptures. During this time make a conscious effort to enhance your devotional life by increasing the time you spend with the Lord. I encourage you to establish a specific time of the day to invoke the presence of the Lord. Psalms 27 provides a good point of reference.

In addition to fasting use this time to become aware of those who are suffering from hunger, homelessness, sickness, injustice, spiritual conflicts and oppression. Remember them in your prayers and even take the initiative to help alleviate their suffering through service, charitable giving, and acts of love. This comes with a challenge to engage in an intentional act of kindness towards someone whether or not they are in need. “Withold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.” (Proverbs 3:27)
